Water Treatment
We all heard about water treatment in the past but few people really know what it is. Water treatment can be described as a series of processes that will make water useful for a particular use. Contrary to popular belief, water treatment does not only relate to making water potable. We can use processes in order to create drinking water, water that is to be used in medical purposes and a lot more. Basically water treatment aims to remove some contaminants that are present in water or alternatively reduce the concentration in which they are present. The entire process is based on the purpose of treating water. For instance, one purpose might be getting used water back in its natural environment and making sure that it will not cause a negative ecological impact.
There are different types of processes that are involved in water treatment. We basically have physical (for instance settling), chemical (for instance coagulation or disinfection) and biological (for instance slow sand filtration, activated sludge or lagooning) water treatment processes used at the moment.
We have 2 main types of water treatment when thinking about why it is done. We thus have water purification and sewage treatment. Water purification is basically a series of processes that removes contaminants present in untreated water. The aim is to create drinking water, which can be used. In most cases we are talking about tap water or bottled water. Through drinking water treatment common substances that are removed include fungi, viruses, iron, sulfur, algae, various man made pollutants and bacteria. Sewage water treatment is a process that aims to transform the water in safe water for the environment. We are basically talking about removing most possible contaminants so that there will be no negative impact on the environment.
A special case that has to be discussed when talking about water treatment is the fact that developing countries are struggling with such a process. According to statistics released in 2006 we now know that every single year around 1.8 million casualties are caused by waterborne diseases. In most situations the responsibility stands in a sanitation system that is inadequate. There are currently a lot of regions around the world that need proper sewerage installed. We have noticed a lot of public institutions that are currently struggling with such a problem. The good news is that water treatment is becoming more common and accessible for people.
