Potable Water
Potable water can be defined as being any type of water that can be consumed by us or basically any animal. We can also refer to it as drinking water, the two terms being almost synonyms. We should know that we can find water that is potable water naturally. The best example can be given in a pristine spring. Water might also need special treatment in order to become potable. No matter how it is obtained, in order to make sure that the water is fit to be drunk tests have to be performed. During this there is a search for contaminants that can cause us harm.
When talking about potable water we need to refer to availability. In all developed countries the source of tap water is not really thought about as it is considered to be safe at all times. To make everything even better, we have noticed that in many cities around the world potable water has been enriched with fluoride in order to give us even more health benefits. On the other hand, when talking about developing countries there are a lot of problems caused by a lack of potable water access. The worst cases are noticed in Africa.
Water that is not potable is dangerous as it can carry heavy metals and diseases. If we drink such water we will surely become ill and there is also the possibility of facing death. The problem is that people might know about the fact that water is not safe but they are still drinking it. This is usually caused by desperation as the human body does need water in order to live. To make everything even worse, a lack of potable water is usually combined with different other problems like open sewers or even a garbage collection system that is limited. In most situations poor people will be hit by such tough living conditions.
The good news is that contaminated water can be transformed into high quality potable water. One of the simplest solutions to do this is to simply boil the water. By doing so all heavy contaminants will still be present but viruses and bacteria are neutralized in most cases. Chemicals can also be used to treat water and there are even special bleach tablets sold in order to achieve this goal. Water filters are also popular and can provide a great solution in obtaining potable water.
Water quality is very important for us and it is the responsibility of the authorities to provide us with the best possible water. There are special laws in most countries that will govern water safety while also issuing severe punishments to people that pollute the water. Potable water is often tested for contamination and the results are always released to the population. This basically means that you can ask for reports and see them yourself.
Unfortunately even first world countries might see cases of limited potable water. This is usually caused by any major disaster that causes water source contamination. If this happens it is very important to understand that boiled water or bottled water might be the only solution available to obtain potable water. The only good news stands in the fact that we can use non-potable water in order to clean and bathe. It is always a very good idea to have a stock of purification tablets in your home in the event that pollution appears. Whenever hurricanes and major storms hit an area all citizens have to wait and only start drinking tap water when the authorities say that this is save. This usually happens when sewage pipes are contaminated because of them being ruptured.
