Is Tap Water Safe Drinking Water?

A lot of people around the world believe that tap water is always safe drinking water. This is because water is filtered in special buildings and we can easily believe that this makes it safe. The problem is that not all tap water is safe drinking water and we must understand this fact. There are different areas around the world that offer tap water that is not that safe. Unfortunately there are numerous factors that can cause this and it is sometimes very hard to know whether or not the water we drink is safe.

Whenever we want to learn whether or not tap water is safe drinking water we have to analyze some facts. First of, tap water comes from groundwater or surface water sources. Such sources are always kept in a watershed, which is very important in delivering drinking water. Information about watersheds can be obtained from any local Environmental Agency located near you. Maps are also available if you want to take a look at them. Unfortunately some watersheds are not built right or have sustained damage along the years. The problem is that some companies or even public institutions do not really care whether or not the water we drink is safe. With this in mind it is our responsibility to make sure that everything is correct. When you suspect that tap water is not safe drinking water you can always take a sample and take it to a local laboratory for tests. After results are clear you will know what the next step has to be.

Unfortunately the authorities can not really do much in most circumstances. With this in mind the only real solution you have is installing a water purifier or water filter. A specialist can easily let you know what you need. In some extreme circumstances it is recommended that you stop drinking tap water and only drink bottled water. In this case tap water is not at all safe drinking water and you might only be able to use it after it is boiled. Since nobody likes to drink boiled water, it will usually be used to wash clothes or for cooking purposes. The good news is that most impurities are destroyed when you boil the water before using it. This is actually recommended by most specialists out there. We can say that a good rule of thumb would be to boil the water whenever you are not sure that it is safe drinking water.
