Vitamins for Seniors
It can be pretty hard for seniors to making the right food choices. By the time they become old, they might not understand the importance of eating nutritionally balanced meals, containing all the essential vitamins. They usually do not acquire the essential vitamins and nutrients that their physically aging bodies demand to combat the onset of weakening conditions.
At old age, many seniors feel, not so efficient at getting all the nutrients. They are prone to more illnesses and have to take more medications as a result. These medications have negative affect the way the body utilizes nutrients.
Vitamin D is as essential for the seniors as it is for the children. It is of key importance in the body's adeptness to absorb calcium, which is needed to keep bones strong. Without calcium, the bones can lose their bulk and become fragile, that may result in a condition called osteoporosis. There are very few senior people who eat the appropriate amount of dairy products to make sure that their body gets sufficient amounts of vitamin D.
Many elderly people also suffer from the oxidation damage due to free radicals, which are unsteady, inconstant molecules, and can have devastating, consequences, by destroying healthy cells. It’s the same like rusting of cars.
Antioxidants help to substitute these free radicals, a method to restrain the amount of damage that they can cause. So fruit and vegetables are quite capable of providing the essential antioxidants, in the form of vitamins. They possess beta carotenes and many other vital vitamins such as Vitamin A, C and E, in order to help seniors to consume the required amounts.
Many seniors develop a risk of heart disease, arthritis, and certain forms of cancers, cataracts, Parkinson's disease and many other disorders, due to the damage caused to their healthy cells. For the proper functioning of immune system, these antioxidants can be of great significance. Due to break down of healthy cells, skin loses its elasticity and begins to droop, crinkle and look older.
Vitamin K is an essential component to keep the body's blood clotting process work in a right way, and many seniors might not get it in sufficient quantity. The lack of Vitamin K can cause Alzheimer's disease.
It’s all about getting the right balance of nutrients from your diet, and for that, it is quite important to supplement your diet by getting multi vitamin supplements, quite regularly. Always try and go for the ones that have been specifically made to suit the changing dietary requirements of older individuals.
