Dangers Of Not Taking Prenatal Vitamins

There are many dangers of not taking prenatal vitamins. In the first few months of development the fetus requires certain nutrients in order to grow properly. A deficiency of nutrients can result in birth defects such as spina bifida and other neural tube disorders. In addition, vitamin deficiencies in the mother can be dangerous to her health. In order to have a healthy pregnancy, women need to understand the dangers of not taking prenatal vitamins.

A deficiency in folate during the first month of pregnancy can result in neural tube defects. A devastating defect called spina bifida is one that occurs often when this nutrient is lacking. Taking a prenatal vitamin prior to conceiving is the best way to reduce the risk of this defect.

A growing fetus means that there is an increased amount of new blood cells being created. All of this requires a significant amount of iron in the diet. Most foods that are high in iron may not supply it in a form that is easily absorbed by the body. It is recommended that all pregnant women take an iron supplement of some form in order to avoid severe anemia. This condition is dangerous to the mother and the developing baby.

Calcium is another nutrient that pregnant women need in large amounts. Pregnancy takes it toll on the body's calcium supply. If a mother does not get enough calcium, her bones will weaken and even her teeth and overall dental health can be compromised. The developing baby requires calcium for proper development as well. Calcium deficiency is one of the dangers of not taking prenatal vitamins.

The symptoms of vitamin deficiencies can be as simple as fainting, tiredness or muscle fatigue. These symptoms can be dangerous to the mother and baby. If a mother faints and falls to the ground she runs the risk of causing bodily harm to herself and to her fetus. It is extremely important for a pregnant woman to take prenatal vitamins in order to avoid these dangers.

Overall, any woman who is pregnant or who is attempting to become pregnant should take a prenatal vitamin. This is something that is very simple, not terribly expensive and is extremely important. All health care professionals understand the importance of vitamin supplementation for pregnant women. They should be sure to explain the dangers of not taking prenatal vitamins to their patients.
