Dry skin is cause by a number of factors. Seasonal changes and indoor heating systems can trigger dry skin. So can hormonal changes and weather, Finally many vitamin deficiencies can also contribute to dry skin.
What vitamins should you use to help with dry skin? There are several. Vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin E are all important and a deficiency in any of these can cause dry skin. You can use vitamins in several forms. There are creams and lotions containing these vitamins that you rub directly into your skin. This may offer temporary relief, however if you truly have a vitamin deficiency then you should look to treat your dry skin from the inside.
Your skin is your body's largest organ. Health problems will first be noticed here. The best thing to do is to see where you are lacking. Sometimes, just taking a general multivitamin containing vitamins A & D will help tremendously. Other times you should look to supplement with extra vitamin D. It is best to try vitamin D first as almost all American have a vitamin D deficiency in varying degrees. The USDA says that a safe dosage is about 450-550 IU. Most experts in vitamin D deficiencies say that dosages upward of 2000 IU are more reasonable and this will improve your dry skin substantially.
A lack of vitamin A can also cause skin to be dry. However, it is much easier to overdose on vitamin A, so be careful. Do not take more than the USDA recommended daily allowance as too much vitamin A will store in your body fat and it can reach toxic levels quickly.
Vitamin E is another fat soluble vitamin. Adding this supplement to your diet will help your skin and hair look great. Vitamin E is a blood thinner and you can run into problems with this. Talk to your doctor if you have heart conditions or if you are taking prescription medicines before using vitamin E to resolve your dry skin problems.
Vitamin D is the safest of these three vitamins as it is very difficult to overdose and it is also the vitamin that most of us are lacking. Outdoor exercise can help us get the vitamin D we need. We should be sure to get enough of all of these vitamins in order maintain a healthy body and for healthy skin.
