Vitamin D Deficiency And Dry Skin
Did you know that most American have a vitamin D deficiency? The reason for this is the concern over skin cancer. By slathering on layers of sunscreen and sunblock, and staying covered up when out in the sun, we are depriving our bodies of an essential vitamin – vitamin D. This is becoming increasingly evident as the occurrences of eczema, psoriasis, acne, and other skin ailments are on the rise.
When we deprive ourselves of exposure to the sun's rays, we are blocking our body's ability to manufacture vitamin D. There are foods that have vitamin D added to them like juices and milk. However, most of us do not consume nearly enough milk and fortified juices and cereals to make up the deficit. Therefore a supplement is in order and so is more unprotected exposure to the sun.
Vitamin D deficiency and dry skin are definitely related. Our bodies need vitamin D for healthy skin. Supplements of vitamin D, especially vitamin D3 are necessary to keep skin healthy. If you are experiencing chronic dry skin try taking up to 2000 IU of a vitamin D3 supplement and see how quickly your skin improves. It is important to know that when choosing a supplement, vitamin D3 is preferable to vitamin D2. The latter is what is in most supplements, so read you labels carefully. Vitamin D2 is not bad for you; it is just not effective as vitamin D3.
Be careful when using cod liver oil as a vitamin D supplement. Cod liver oil can also be high in vitamin A. It is possible to overdose on vitamin A easily, especially if you are taking cod liver oil for the vitamin D. Both of these vitamins are fat soluble. This means that any of the vitamins not immediately used by your body is stored in your body's fat reserves. If taking cod liver oil for only vitamin D see if you can get a brand that does not contain vitamin A.
Now that you know about vitamin D deficiency and dry skin you will understand how to treat it. More exposure to sunlight, while avoiding the hours of noon to 2pm, will help get vitamin D into your body naturally. We know that supplementation is necessary. So be sure to get a high quality supplement and see if this does not clear up your skin.
