Is Too Much Vitamin E Safe?

In most cases consuming too much of any vitamin is a bad idea. Our goal should be in meeting the requirements and not consuming too less. Unfortunately we can be faced with too much vitamin E in different circumstances. With this in mind we need to understand whether or not it is safe.

Some time ago a belief appeared that stated vitamin E should be taken in higher quantities. The reason behind this stands in the antioxidant properties of the nutrient. Oxidative damage can easily happen when we think about our cells. This can alter the cellular function and metabolism. In extreme cases oxidative damage is responsible for causing cardiovascular problems, cancer and even death. Since vitamin E is a natural antioxidant that can fight this condition it was believed that high vitamin E doses can protect against a number of highly damaging diseases. The problem is that too much vitamin E can actually be bad for us.

A recent study that was performed in 2004 showed that death is possible when a person takes too much vitamin E on a long term basis. The study was presented at an American Heart Association meeting. To put it simple, it was shown that 5% of the people that took too much vitamin E died. Although the reason why they died was not reported it is still a big problem that should be properly handled.

Unfortunately we are faced with mixed opinions on the topic of vitamin E intake. On the other hand there are some facts that can aid us in knowing what to do in the future. Regular recommended quantities of vitamin E do aid our body and we end up with protection against a number of possible diseases. Higher dosage has not been proved to be beneficial from any point of view. With this in mind let us think about needing to take too much vitamin E. If no good can come from this why do it? It is very hard to reach vitamin E overdose without the use of supplements and in most situations special vitamin E supplementation should only be prescribed by the doctor. Also, remember that certain cereals are fortified with vitamin E. This means that from one plate of such cereals you can get around 40% of all the vitamin E you need on a daily basis. It is easy to get the vitamin E RDA needed and higher dosage is not required in most situations.
