Vitamin D Toxicity
A lot of people are afraid of vitamin D toxicity when the truth is that they should not be. We are talking about a nutrient that is naturally created in our body if our skin is hit by sun rays. At the end of the day you should fear vitamin D deficiency more than toxicity. We should focus more on the benefits linked with good intake of this nutrient. Although a lot of people do fear vitamin D toxicity, there are some facts that you should be aware of.
Vitamin D is basically a steroid hormone. It is very important for us because it aids in bone mineralization and regulating levels of phosphorus and calcium in our blood. Vitamin D toxicity can happen but it is also very rare. It can only happen when too much is taken in through supplementation. On the other hand supplementing your diet with vitamin D products is a great idea as it helps in eliminating the risk of developing some diseases.
The symptoms associated with vitamin D toxicity are appetite loss, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, thirst, weight loss and nausea. In order to avoid this you should always make sure that you never go over 2000 IU daily, which is the upper toleration limit. The good news is that almost all cases of vitamin D toxicity that have been reported were caused by situations that can easily be avoided. The most common example stands in people that are not attentive when reading supplement directions.
You should not be afraid of vitamin D toxicity and eliminate the nutrient from your diet. Research showed us that people living in cool or cloudy climates are very easily affected by vitamin D deficiency. In this case there is no other option but taking supplements. The key to avoiding toxicity is to read the labels and simply do the required math. Both food and supplements offer us huge benefits when talking about this vitamin. We basically eliminate sun exposure risks by using supplementation. Specialists currently agree that vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for our body and failure to take in enough of it can cause serious problems on a long term basis. Handling vitamin D toxicity is easy in most situations and all you really have to do is reduce the intake of the nutrient. We recommend that whenever you are faced with some of the symptoms mentioned above you go to a doctor in order to see whether or not you are faced with toxicity or something else.
