Vitamin D Supplements
We now know a lot about vitamin D and the possible benefits it brings us. With this in mind it is clear to see why people are considering buying vitamin D supplements. The problem is that there are some facts that you should be aware of before purchasing. Let us take a look at them and properly handle the subject.
Most calcium and multi vitamin products on the market include vitamin D in good dosage. In the event that you are already taking any supplement you have to look at the label and see how much you are taking in. Keep in mind that you should never go over 2000 vitamin D IU daily as this can cause serious problems. Also, there are some individuals that have a higher risk of having to fight vitamin D deficiency through supplements.
Breastfed infants usually need vitamin D supplements because human breast milk does not usually have enough of the nutrient. Combine this with the fact that few infants actually receive enough sun exposure. Pediatrics now recommend that you buy a vitamin D supplement that includes around 400 IU of the nutrient, which is exactly the entire dose needed by the baby. Failure to meet the infant’s vitamin D needs can lead to improper bone development and this should be avoided at all costs.
Adults may also need vitamin D supplements. If you do not get enough sun exposure you might be faced with vitamin D deficiency. The problem is that few foods actually contain the nutrient. If you are a vegetarian you are probably faced with the same vitamin D deficiency problem and supplements are required.
In most cases we get the recommended vitamin D amount from fortified milk. Unfortunately we do have a problem if you are intolerant to lactose. An alternative stands in using soymilk but there are far less brands on the market that include vitamin D fortification in the formula. Also, if you are older than 50 you will probably require vitamin D supplements. This is because the skin is not as capable of creating vitamin D as when you were younger. Combine this with the fact that even kidneys can lose this ability and we are faced with possible problems.
Talking strictly about skin you should be aware of the fact that dark skin people will not produce enough vitamin D naturally. This is because there is less melanin present in one’s skin so the creation of vitamin D is hindered. If you are obese you should also consider vitamin D supplements. In this case you might be faced with this nutrient being stored and the body not being able to release it in time due to having too much fat.
Wearing sunscreen is always needed during summer but this can also cause you to need vitamin D supplements. The good news is that vitamin D is still produced in small quantities if you wear sunscreen. This is possible due to numerous reasons but you should always be aware of the fact that less is produced. If you are suffering from liver diseases then we truly have a big problem. Vitamin D is fat soluble and people that can not tolerate fat or have problems with their liver do need supplementation. Keep in mind that in this case you might be faced with a deficiency of more than just vitamin D.
Vitamin D supplements are used in order to counter deficiency, which can cause osteoporosis and generally weak bones. You must always pay attention to your diet and sun exposure to make sure that enough quantities of this nutrient are always available for your body to use.
