Vitamin D Sources
Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient in our diet. It is highly important if we want to live a long and healthy life, especially when relating to the structure and integrity of our bones. Unfortunately deficiencies are very common and serious side effects can appear. This is exactly why we need to be aware of the best vitamin D sources available.
We only have two main vitamin D sources if we do not take into account the possibility of supplementation. As you might imagine, one of them is food. The problem is that vitamin D is found in high concentration only in fish oils and fatty fish. How many people eat enough fish on a day to day basis? The answer is “fewer than you might expect”. Nutritionists from all around the world put an accent on the importance of fish in our diets but few people understand this. On the other hand, we are faced with a lot of help in the form of vitamin D fortified milk. Just one cup can give us a fourth of the daily requirements of the regular adult body. Combine this with the fact that vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin (which means excess quantities that are not used end up stored for being used the second day) and we do get a good vitamin D source in fortified milk. Remember that only milk can be fortified. Different other dairy products like yogurt or cheese are usually not fortified with vitamin D.
The second vitamin D source that is usually not considered stands in sunlight exposure. Our body can synthesize vitamin D naturally when the skin is hit by UV rays. The problem is that different factors can influence the process. This includes latitude, time, smog, clouds, season and sunscreen. In fact, sunscreen that has a protection level higher than 8 basically blocks all UV rays that can trigger Vitamin D synthesis. On the other hand, putting on sunscreen is very important as skin damage can also appear when the sun is too strong and exposure too long. Unfortunately, if sun exposure is not sufficient you will need to make sure that you get vitamin D from other sources.
As you can see there are not many vitamin D sources available. This means that we can easily be faced with deficiencies. In order to avoid this, whenever deficiency is suspected a good multi vitamin product that contains vitamin D in adequate quantities should be more than enough to solve the problem.
