Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency is possible for most of us, especially if we do not get enough sun exposure. This vitamin is crucial for the maintenance of muscles and bones and it is also linked with preventing a number of diseases. Dealing with vitamin D deficiency is not always easy. We need to understand that the only person that should diagnose us is the doctor and nobody else. Only through a series of tests can vitamin D deficiency be discovered.

Some people have increased risks of developing vitamin D deficiency. This includes breastfeeding or pregnant women, infants that are breastfed, people that have little exposure to sun, individuals that suffer from a number of disease and those that take different drugs like primidone, barbiturates, phenytoin and carbamezepine. The real problem stands in the fact that vitamin D deficiency is very common. It seems that around 2 out of 10 people are suffering from such a condition. To make it even worse, people that have a South Asian origin are even more likely to be faced with this situation. Unfortunately a lot of people do not have any symptom associated so discovering vitamin D deficiency can be very hard.

Although you might not have symptoms, it is very important that you know what can appear in the event that they start showing. In most cases people are simply faced with aches or tiredness. On the other hand, vitamin D deficiency can also lead to more serious symptoms. Muscle pain and weakness can appear and can even lead to problems when walking. Bone pain can appear, especially in your legs and hips. Children that are showing severe cases of vitamin D deficiency can present soft leg bones and skulls. Muscle spasms are also very common, especially in children.

In most situations vitamin D deficiency is treated by taking vitamin D supplements. What you might not be aware of is the fact that there are different ways in which you can take such supplementation. Vitamin D injections are very popular these days. You can easily understand why because one injection will give you all the vitamin D required for around 6 months. If you do not like taking pills this might be the best alternative possible. On the other hand, the most common type of vitamin D supplement used to fight deficiency is the regular tabled or liquid form. No matter what type of supplement you take, you should always make sure that it is good and that comes with the needed vitamin D daily dose that will make you avoid vitamin D deficiency.
