Vitamin D and Sunlight

Vitamin D and sunlight go hand in hand in working together for our body. Vitamin D is highly important for us and deficiencies can lead to a series of problems that we should always avoid. The problem is that the most important source of vitamin D we have is our body. It is capable of creating its own vitamin D when the skin is high by sunlight. Unfortunately sunlight can also cause problems when exposure is too much. With this in mind we are faced with a problem. Should we choose to take supplements instead of using the natural capability of our body to generate vitamin D? Unfortunately it is not that easy to answer this question.

Vitamin D and sunlight are always linked but there are people that simply do not have enough sun exposure. This can be caused by a number of reasons raging from bad climate to night jobs that make you sleep during the day most of the week. Whenever we are faced with lacks of sunlight exposure we can make sure that our body can not synthesize its own vitamin D in the needed quantities. In this case we should turn our attention towards food. We have some products that are fortified with vitamin D. Most of the vitamin D we take from food is given by fortified milk. Unfortunately we can not really drink such milk every single day. In most situations if we do not have enough sunlight exposure our only alternative to have enough vitamin D in our system stands in vitamin D supplements. You can also opt for a good multi vitamin supplement that offers you high quantities of vitamin D and other nutrients that are crucial for our body to work right.

Another important fact that we need to take into consideration when talking about vitamin D sunlight exposure is sunscreen. Unfortunately, especially during summer, we do need to use sunscreen because the sun can cause a lot of damage, not to mention aiding in developing skin cancer. If we use sunscreen our skin will not generate vitamin D anymore because UV rays can not reach it. If we keep using sunscreen and apply it properly we can be faced with vitamin D deficiency. On the other hand this is something that we might end up doing willingly because too much sun is damaging. What we need to always take into consideration is the fact that fortified foods and supplements are always available.
