Vitamin C Dosage

Contrary to popular belief, vitamin C dosage will vary based on the individual. There are different factors that have to be taken into account. For instance, people that smoke, breastfeeding women and pregnant women will need to take in more vitamin C than regular quantities recommended.

There have been many studies performed and a lot of interest has been placed on vitamin C. Every nutritionist out there realizes how important this nutrient is and it is clear to say that now we have fixed high quality information concerning vitamin C dosage. Let us first talk about the recommended dietary allowances that you should always consider.

First of, children need vitamin C dosage that is lower when compared with adults. Children aged 1 to 3 need 15 mg, 4 to 8 need 25 mg and 9 to 13 need 45 mg. Once the person reaches 14 years of age we need to talk about differences between males and females. Between 14 and 18 males require 75 mg daily while women need 65 mg daily. Adult women over 19 require 75 mg daily while men need 90 mg daily. Pregnant women are a special case because they will need 80 mg daily if under or 18 years of age and 85 mg daily if over 19.When a woman is breastfeeding these doses can be reduced with 5 mg. Every single smoker out there has to consume 35 mg extra in order to meet the damage done by smoking.

It is also important to think about the maximum intake admitted. This basically refers to how much vitamin C can be included on a daily basis without risking vitamin C toxicity. Children aged between 1 and 3 should not take more than 400 mg daily. Those aged 4 to 8 have to reach a dosage lower than 650 mg and those between 9 and 13 have to keep it lower than 1200 mg. People between 14 and 18 should not go over 1800 mg and adults over 19 should not go over 2000 mg daily. Breastfeeding and pregnant women of 18 years or under have to make sure that they do not go over 1800 mg and the rest of pregnant and breastfeeding women can take vitamin C dosage of a maximum of 2000 mg.

In most cases vitamin C dosage is easy to meet through what we eat. This is because there are many foods out there that include this important nutrient. To make everything even better, vitamin C is also one agent that is added to different drinks and foods. You must understand that the content of vitamin C will decrease whenever the drink or food is cooked and even stored. We must also take into account some important facts about vitamin C dosage. Chewable vitamins usually contain sugar and are acidic. You should always consider brushing your teeth right after taking any chewable vitamin C product. We must also add that vitamin C excess is eliminated through urine. This basically means that higher dosage of vitamin C is not really dangerous but it will also not bring any benefits in most people.

We have seen many people that do not really know how to handle vitamin C dosage. If you are one of them there is one thing that you can always do: talk with your doctor! Pharmacists and healthcare providers can offer you every single piece of information you would require about vitamin C dosage. It is always a good idea to talk to them when you have questions or there are aspects that you simply do not understand.
