Vitamin C Deficiency

Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) is a crucial nutrient when talking about collagen formation. It helps in maintaining connective tissue, dentin and bone integrity. These are just some of the many benefits that you can get from vitamin C. The good news is that you can find high quantities of the vitamin in most fruits and vegetables. A diet that is high in oranges, kiwi, lemons, broccoli, tomatoes, sprouts, sweet potatoes, grapefruits and fresh milk will do wonders for your immune system.

The most common vitamin C deficiency appears in children that are aged 6 to 12 months. This usually happens when the diet is deficient in vegetables and citrus fruits. Deficiencies are also quite common in elderly people. To make everything even worse, people that consume a lot of alcohol are also prone to vitamin C deficiency. You should also know that a lot of families around the world end up not consuming foods rich in vitamin C due to low income. Women that are breastfeeding or pregnant also require higher doses of vitamin C. The same can be said for smokers. Every single smoker needs to take in an extra of 35 mg of vitamin C daily and is more exposed to the possibility of developing vitamin C deficiency.

When talking about vitamin C deficiency you should be aware of the symptoms that can appear. It is also important to understand that such symptoms will only appear when the deficiency will be spread on a longer period of time. It is not dangerous to lack vitamin C in your nutrition in one day, as long as it does not become a habit. The early symptoms that can be mentioned are skin changes. This includes easy bruising, loosening of your teeth, improper wound healing and gum disease. In fact, the gums are affected a lot. You will see that they become spongy, friable, purple and swollen. As time passes and vitamin C deficiency is not treated you will also have to deal with more serious symptoms and side effects like jaundice, oliguria, generalized oedema, convulsions and fever.

In order to not be faced with vitamin C deficiency most adults need to take in a minimum of 50 mg of this vitamin daily. Pregnant women and breastfeeding women will need more. If you can not meet the minimum requirements through what you eat you will need to use supplementation.
