Vitamin C and Cancer
Recent pre-clinical studies have pointed out a problem when linking vitamin C and cancer. It seems that this vitamin can actually reduce anticancer drugs effectiveness. Since this can be a really bad thing we need to take a closer look at this situation. Vitamin C supplements can reduce our normal ability to respond to cancer treatment.
It is needless to say that vitamin C and cancer is one topic that is really controversial. Many studies have been performed and the wide belief in the medical world is linked with the antioxidant property of vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is usually considered good for all cancer patients because of this very reason. The problem is that some chemotherapy drugs will create oxygen free radicals. These are basically oxygen molecules that are unpaired and that can react with different molecules that are found in cells. The immediate result is the death of the cell. In theory vitamin C can actually keep the cell alive even if chemotherapy is trying to kill it.
A test was done by using chemotherapy drugs and dehydroascorbic acid (also known as DHA – the form of ascorbic acid that actually enters the cell). The results were surprising because the drugs did not work well if the cell was treated by using vitamin C. At the end of the day it was proven that a variation of 30% to 70% less cancer cells ended treated. The variation was given by the type of chemotherapy drug used but the problem was that every single time vitamin C ended affecting the effectiveness of the drug. The real problem stands in the fact that vitamin C supplements actually interact with cancer drugs. At the end of some studies it was concluded that chemotherapy stopped cancer that was untreated but the tumor did grew if vitamin C was added in cells. The only good news that can be mentioned is that the quantity of ascorbic acid needed in order to interact negatively with cancer drugs is higher than RDA. It is around the same value as in people that are using vitamin C supplements.
In conclusion, vitamin C and cancer do not work well together. This does not mean that you should stop all vitamin C intakes. If you only stick to RDA then all should be safe. On the other hand, if you are undergoing chemotherapy and are supplementing your diet with vitamin C supplements you will be faced with a serious problem. Make sure that you consult your doctor if this is your case so that the problem is taken care of.
