Folic Acid Supplements and Cognitive Functions
Folic acid supplements are used for a variety of possible reasons. A new study that was performed suggests the fact that such supplementation will aid older adults in improving cognitive function. Because of this fact people are talking about possible benefits for people that suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Does folic acid supplementation aid in this case?
The truth is that we do not have any concrete evidence to backup such a claim. Folic acid supplements do seem to improve different cognitive functions to some extent. On the other hand we can not say that people that have Alzheimer will find this beneficial. This can also be said about different other dementia types possible.
At the moment we are faced with studies that only dealt with people that were showing low levels of folate. In this particular situation cognitive performance does become poor. It has been proven that folic acid supplements do help such individuals. The problem is that we are basically dealing with supplementation that makes you get back to regular levels of vitamin B9 and not surpassing it. We do not really know about the effects that extra folic acid supplements have on people that show regular levels of folate. In most situations people that suffer from cognitive function problems do not have low folate levels.
To make everything even more complicated, different studies that were done in 2003 showed that folic acid supplements had no effect on people that were healthy. This refers strictly to cognitive functions. Individuals that suffered from dementia or cognitive decline were not positively affected by folic acid supplements.
The conclusion stands in the fact that there are mixed results when talking about the effect that folic acid supplements have on cognitive functions. We can say that it does improve them if you suffer from low folate levels. On the other hand, if this is not your case, it seems that it does not really aid in getting the benefits you might want. In the event that you are suffering from cognitive function problems the best course of action is to consult a specialist and respect his indications to the letter. There are different drugs that can help and it is crucial that the doctor always knows your personal condition. Only then treatment can be accurate and folic acid supplements will not really aid in most cases. This also includes Alzheimer’s disease and all similar conditions
