Folic Acid Supplement Intake in Women

Lately we have noticed a lot of women that end up supplementing their diet plan with a folic acid supplement. This especially happens when the woman is planning to have a baby as the benefits associated with this vitamin are well known at the moment. Women are more informed and this did bring in an increase in folic acid supplement intake.

Before you conceive a baby it is recommended that you take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. By doing this you will make a huge step towards reducing neural tube defects in your baby by around 80 percent. Keep in mind that there are also other factors that can influence the appearance of such problems. The best examples can be given in obesity and diabetes.

Most women will take in all of the needed folic acid quantity by simply eating one breakfast cereal serving. The only thing is that you have to pay attention that the cereal is fortified with folic acid in 100%. This basically means that one serving contains all the RDA required by a woman.

The folic acid supplement intake in women is constantly rising. In 2007 we have seen an increase from 28% to 40% in women that have taken such supplementation. Unfortunately Hispanic women ended up taking less than in the past. The same was a reality for less educated women. Although this trend was predictable it is still something that needs to be taken care of in the future. Doctors need to start emphasizing the importance of a good folic acid supplement during pregnancy. To make everything even more important, folic acid is the only vitamin that has been proven to have a special impact on women.

There are many ways in which you can assure your folic acid supplement intake. Two are widely used. The first one stands in buying a good all around prenatal vitamin supplement that contains 100% of the folic acid RDA. The second one stands in buying a regular multi vitamin supplement and another supplement that is only based on folic acid. Both alternatives are good although the prenatal vitamins are recommended for most women. You should understand that taking any folic acid supplement alone does not solve all problems that you might be faced with. This is why it is always better to talk to a specialist before deciding to do go ahead and purchase any folic acid supplement, no matter how good it is.
