Folic Acid Diet

Folic acid is a very important vitamin for our bodies. We have to make sure that the recommended dietary allowance (400 mcg every single day) is always met so that we would not have to deal with folic acid deficiency. Unfortunately we see a lot of people in this condition. When talking about folic acid, diets usually contain enough of this nutrient. The real problem appears when we do not really pay attention to our nutrition plan. If we do not eat well balanced meals we can easily be faced with a folic acid diet that is not at all proper.

Folic acid (also known as folacin or folate) is found in a lot of whole grains, fruits, beans and vegetables. This vitamin is beneficial because it reduces some cancer risks. According to various studies we now know that the best way to consume folic acid is to take it from what we eat. Vitamin supplements sometimes destroy nutrients so a good diet is what we need to aim for. On the other hand, folic acid supplements need to be added to a pregnant woman’s diet. This is because a woman that wants to have a baby, is pregnant or has recently given birth will need a 50% increase in folic acid intake. If we do the math we see that a pregnant woman requires 600 mcg of folate daily, which is sometimes very hard to manage through diet alone. The reason why folic acid intake needs to be increased stands in the fact that folate is capable of reducing the risk that the baby develops neural tube defects (with the most common one being spina bifida.

One of the best possible sources of folic acid in your diet is liver. Since we can not eat liver all of the time we do need to add other sources as well. We recommend vegetables and fruits as some of them include not only folic acid but different important nutrients as well. The best examples can be given in grapefruits, limes, oranges, mango, guava lettuce, cabbage, spinach, tangerines, papaya, strawberries and peanuts.

In the event that you have a diet that is not well balanced you should really consider taking vitamin supplementation. A good all around product that contains every important nutrient is usually enough for everybody. Pregnant women should consider special folic acid supplements in order to supplement their diets but problems should not appear if we pay attention to nutrition.
