Vitamin B6 Deficiency

Vitamin B6 is very important for our bodies because it works like a catalyst in different reactions linked with amino acids. Although Vitamin B6 deficiency is rare it sometimes does happen. On the other hand you should know that this nutrient is present in most foods out there. We are talking about a vitamin that is a part of the water soluble vitamin family. An adult man has to take in around 2 mg daily while an adult woman has to include around 1.6 mg daily. If we take in too much the excess will be eliminated naturally but if the minimums are not met we can be faced with various problems.

Vitamin B6 deficiency is very rare. In most cases it appears in the event that nutrient absorption is deficient in our gastrointestinal tract. This usually happens when dealing with chronic diarrhea, alcoholism or using some drugs like penicillamine or isoniazid. As you can imagine vitamin B6 deficiency can also appear when dealing with starvation or genetic disorders.

The biggest problem with vitamin B6 deficiency stands in the symptoms associated. We can say that they are quite vaguely defined and examples can be given in muscle weakness, walking difficulty, irritability, nervousness and insomnia. The problem is that such symptoms can easily be misled for being caused by other possible conditions. On the other hand vitamin B6 deficiency can also cause cracking and fissure in the corner of the mouth. Unfortunately children risk a lot if dealing with lacks of this nutrient. If an infant faces B6 deficiencies in the nutrition plan the results are irritability, seizures and problems growing.

In order to diagnose vitamin B6 deficiency the patient has to go through transaminase. This is a special test that will extract red blood cells and place them in 2 test tubes. Thanks to different chemicals the doctor can easily realize whether or not the individual suffers from this condition. The problem is that such a test can only be performed in a lab and those chemicals are required. This basically means that we will rarely be faced with a diagnosis until the deficiency period is too long and causes such tests to be requested by your doctor. The good news is that once diagnosed with vitamin B6 deficiency you will easily be treated. All that is basically required is that you consume the RDA needed. If we are dealing with absorption problems we can always supplement the diet with vitamin supplements.

Although vitamin B6 deficiency is easily treatable it is always better to be safe then sorry. This basically means that you have to make sure that your nutrition plan is proper. Make sure that the RDA is met and if you know that you are not having a healthy diet you should immediately consider buying vitamin supplements. In most cases a good multi vitamin supplement is all you need because such products include good quantities of all B vitamins, including B6. You must also watch your diet. Vitamin B6 deficiency can also be avoided if you include enough foods that are rich in this nutrient. The best examples can be given in grains, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs and poultry. Whenever you feel any of the symptoms above appearing and you notice that they last longer than normal you should consult a doctor. In most cases deficiencies of most B vitamins are minor and very easy to treat. On the other hand, we can also have severe deficiencies that can affect your way of life. We recommend that you keep a good relationship with your doctor and in the event that deficiencies are noticed do not hesitate to supplement your diet with a good multivitamin product or a B Complex vitamin solution.
