Vitamin B5 Toxicity

Vitamin B5 toxicity is one subject that is rarely met when talking about nutrition. This is because of different reasons. First of we are talking about a water soluble vitamin. Such vitamins need to be taken in daily because any excess that is not needed will be naturally eliminated by our body. This comes in contrast with fat soluble vitamins, which can be stored inside our body and used at a later point in time. Such a reality means that what we really need to consider is vitamin B5 deficiency because vitamin B5 toxicity is a lot less probable. Secondly, the quantity of pantothenic acid that you would have to take in order to reach overdose level is a lot higher than the minimum daily requirements. The only possibility of getting vitamin B5 toxicity is to take too much supplementation of this nutrient.

You might find it strange that someone would take vitamin B5 supplements up to the point that it reaches toxicity levels. You can only do it willingly. On the other hand there is one situation in which people end up taking a lot of pantothenic acid. According to various studies it has been proved that high doses of vitamin B5 can aid in dealing with acne problems. A lot of individuals have successfully treated acne with the use of high doses of vitamin B5. The problem is that toxicity can become a reality.

In order to deal acne we have to take doses of around 10 grams daily. On the other hand doses of 10 to 20 grams of vitamin B5 can bring in toxicity. Vitamin B5 toxicity symptoms associated include nausea, sleepiness, depression, diarrhea and liver impairment. Whenever these symptoms are visible you will have to consult a doctor because long term abuse of vitamin B5 might cause problems.

The good news is that there are no serious side effects associated with vitamin B5 toxicity. As already mentioned, excesses are eliminated from your body on a daily basis. Long term us has not been shown to produces serious damage to humans so we can say we are safe. On the other hand toxicity symptoms can become reality. In this case you can either stop the B5 supplementation and go for alternative treatments or try to deal with the symptoms that appear by using other drugs. The best action is taken only after you talk with your doctor and discuss the best course of action in your case.
