Vitamin B5 Deficiency

If you live a healthy lifestyle and pay attention that your diet is balanced there is no need to think about vitamin B5 deficiency because it will never happen. This is even truer for people that supplement their meals with a good multi-vitamin supplement. The problem is that there is one factor that can seriously change the statement made above. We are talking about alcohol consumption. Almost all alcoholics out there have vitamin B5 deficiency combined with deficiencies of several other key nutrients for the human body.

Although vitamin B5 deficiency is rare you should be aware of the associated symptoms. Individuals suffering from such a condition usually experience fatigue, depression and chronic stress. Pantothenic acid is highly important for the formation of hormones and it is actually a natural anti-depressant. Alcoholics have problems with B5 assimilation and usually simply do not eat enough to meet the minimum B5 daily required quantities. Lack of B5 leads to depression and alcohol only makes the depression worse. We are thus stuck in a vicious circle that can be very hard to get out of.

The problem is that vitamin B5 is highly important when linking to acetaldehyde liver detoxification after too much alcohol was consumed. The longer the time frame that alcohol is consumed the higher the levels of acetaldehyde present in our liver. The more acetaldehyde present, the more vitamin B5 is required in order to aid in detoxification. In most cases people that have consumed alcohol for long periods of time are faced with stress and vitamin B5 deficiency. To put it simple the body can not fight alcohol abuse alone. On the other hand, stress and depression that are associated with alcoholism are treatable with increasing the intake of vitamin B5. Unfortunately people that are under this condition will not think about that and will have to suffer from vitamin B5 deficiency until a doctor realizes it and prescribes the right supplementation needed.

Sometimes vitamin B5 deficiency can appear from an improper diet. A lot of pantothenic acid is lost when cooking so if you do not also consume fresh meals you might be faced with such a condition. The good news is that the symptoms mentioned above are easy to spot. Whenever you feel them appearing you should aim to supplement your nutrition plan with a good multi vitamin supplement that includes B complex vitamins. This should deal with vitamin B5 deficiency and other possible nutrient deficiencies that might exist.
