Niacinamide

Contrary to popular belief, niacinamide is not identical to niacin. In fact, niacinamide is niacin with an extra amide molecule that attached to the initial niacin molecule. Although differences between the two are usually not to be taken into account, one should be considered. Niacin doses that are higher than 50 mg are known to cause skin flushing.

Although we are dealing with basically the same applications, there are differences when talking about niacinamide use when compared to niacin. When niacin is used under niacinamide form it will be useful for patients that are suffering from prediabetes and arthritis. On the other hand, niacin is usually used in order to reduce bad cholesterol levels while raising good cholesterol levels.

Niacinamide has been linked with diabetes ever since the fifties. That was when a study that was performed on animals showed that niacinamide was useful in diabetes development prevention. This discovery was eventually confirmed in 1980 and clinical studies have been ordered because of this fact. Niacinamide works by enhancing insulin secretion while increasing its sensitivity. There is clear evidence that niacinamide supplements are effective when preventing development of diabetes of type I. The only real problem stands in the fact that you need to start taking niacinamide when diabetes first appears. The way the vitamin works stands in a restoration of beta cells, which stops diabetes evolution.

The problem with diabetes is that it is one disease that will cost you a lot of money. The possibility to stop it from even appearing or making it develop slower will basically save you a lot of money on the long run. Nowadays doctors are using niacinamide supplements on patients that have just started showing symptoms of type I diabetes.

Besides diabetes, there is also evidence that niacinamide can have an impact on arthritis. The problem is that we are only faced with preliminary results and no proof has been visible. According to some doctors, patients that suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis show positive results when taking niacinamide. On the other hand we do need to have more clinical studies performed.

In conclusion you need to understand that niacinamide is useful when dealing with diabetes and arthritis. Unfortunately we are not faced with enough proof when talking about arthritis but the link with diabetes is clear and needs to be taken into account. On the other hand you will need to consult your doctor whenever taking niacinamide supplements.
