Niacin Toxicity

Whenever we are talking about vitamins we are faced with a common believe that there is no way you can have vitamin overdoses. Most people out there think that vitamins are safe and may end up taking too much supplementation. The truth is that there are different vitamins that can cause a lot of problems if overdoses are present. One of them is Niacin, which is responsible for a lot of discomforts when taken in too much. The problem is that your doctor might have to give you an overdose of niacin in the event that your LDL cholesterol level is too high. The same goes for triglyceride levels and you should also know that higher doses of niacin will increase your HDL cholesterol level. What you have to be aware of is that you need to be under professional supervision when higher than regular doses of niacin are administered as the side effects are not at all pleasant.

The most common side effects linked with niacin toxicity are itching, facial flushing, skin rashes, dry skin, indigestion, fulminant hepatic failure, cardiac arrhythmias, orthostasis, birth defects and hyperglycemia. Most people undergoing pharmacological niacin treatment will have to deal with facial flushing. Prostaglandin will mediate this side effect and simply by taking around 300 mg of aspirin (usually 30 minutes before you take niacin) you will be able to get rid of flushing. Some doctors might prescribe ibuprofen as an alternative. Niacin toxicity side effects are usually reduced if you take medication when you eat. When talking about facial flushing, most patients will not show the side effect anymore after 14 days of stable dosage.

Niacin toxicity can also need to blood sugar levels that are too high. This is usually linked with diabetes mellitus and it will actually make its symptoms worse. Another common side effect is hyperuricemia.

Extreme doses of niacin are very dangerous. They can lead to toxicity that is life threatening. In most cases of niacin overdose that is too high we are faced with niacin maculopathy. This basically means that your retina and macula will become thicker. Unfortunately such a condition can lead to blindness and blurred vision. The good news is that maculopathy can be reversed by simply stopping taking niacin.

Niacin toxicity is a reality but few people will have to face it unless when under treatment for another condition. In this case you will be supervised by your doctor and problems should not appear. It is very hard to reach niacin overdose levels because this vitamin is eliminated daily from our body if there is too much present.
