Niacin Supplements

Niacin supplements are available on the market but you must have caution when taking them. In most cases the required daily requirements of this vitamin is met with a proper diet and (if needed) a good multi-vitamin supplement. Unfortunately some individuals are faced with niacin deficiency and in this case there is a need to take niacin supplements.

There are three forms of niacin supplements available on the market: inositol hexaniacinate, niacinamide and nicotinate (also known as nicotinic acid). Every single vitamin B3 form comes with special therapeutic effects. In most cases individuals that take niacin supplements are trying to deal with lowering bad cholesterol levels and eventually trying to obtain good cholesterol levels increase. According to various studies that have been performed in the past inositol hexaniacinate has good results when linked with cholesterol levels. It has been shown that it reduces triglycerides and bad cholesterol while also raising good cholesterol with around 18%. Nicotinic acid can also have similar properties when dealing with cholesterol lowering. Inositol hexaniacinate has also been shown to help treat pain associated with various circulatory problems and Raynaud’s disease. This is because it will help relax arteries and veins while also increasing the body’s blood flow.

The problem with affecting the cholesterol is the fact that the niacin doses that have to be taken are far higher than what your body really needs. In most cases we are dealing with 1 to 2 mg daily, a dose that is high enough to cause some problems. In the even that you are taking niacin supplements and are also eating foods that are high in vitamin B3 you might be faced with niacin toxicity and various unwanted side effects. Since this is not what you want you will have to pay proper attention to dosage and make changes in your day to day diet.

Niacin supplements that include niacinamide are used for the form’s anti-inflammatory characteristics. Joint inflammation is usually reduced and this means that niacinamide based niacin supplements are mainly prescribed for people that have osteoarthritis.

Niacin does affect our nervous system in a positive way. This has caused doctors to use niacin supplements when dealing with depression symptoms. According to some studies this vitamin can improve our mood while also aiding people that suffer from anxiety and panic disorders to stay calm. Niacin will also aid us in controlling blood sugar level. It has been proven that niacin supplements can aid in slowing down the development of diabetes. Keep in mind that in this case you will have to be under medical supervision when taking B3.

In most cases niacin supplements are saved but only if the recommended limits are not surpassed. If we keep using these supplements for a long period of time we can be faced with different unwanted side effects. Examples can be given in dizziness, flushing, vomiting, cramps and nausea. When we take more than 2 grams daily we can also be faced with blood thinning and larger amounts will usually bring in liver damage. In most cases treating diabetes, circulatory problems and high cholesterol levels with niacin supplements brings in a medium dose of 500 mg of vitamin B3, taken 3 times daily. When dealing with anxiety and depression most patients will only need around 50 mg on a daily basis while patients suffering from arthritis will require around 1 gram daily.

Always remember the fact that niacin supplements need to be taken when eating and only under prescription and medical supervision. This is extremely important when dealing with the most severe conditions mentioned above. Also, it has been shown that niacinamide and inositol hexaniacinate are better tolerated by the human body than nicotinate. Make sure you also discuss this with your doctor and respect his indications to the letter so that no problems will appear.
