Niacin and Pregnancy

The topic of niacin and pregnancy is not really well researched and we are lacking some important information that have to be taken into account. There are currently no studies available on the impact of high niacin doses on pregnancy. We do not know if niacin overdose can cause problems with the child or the mother. On the other hand when we are dealing with doses of around 35 mg of vitamin B3 daily we are safe. If you are taking supplements containing niacin and you are pregnant here is what you should know.

Niacin is a part of B complex vitamins. When you are pregnant you will need this vitamin and it is recommended that you take it in through a good diet. Prenatal vitamins also include small doses of niacin and if you are dealing with only that you should be safe. The problem is that large doses might bring in problems.

Niacin is labeled as pregnancy category C. The FDA will use a special category system when classifying risks to the fetus in the event a drug is taken when pregnant. Category C refers to medication that was not yet studies properly on pregnant women. On the other hand, studies that were done on animals have shown that niacin does cause fetus harm.

In the event that the woman that became pregnant is undergoing niacin treatment aimed towards reducing cholesterol the doctor will recommend that niacin supplements are no longer administered. Always remember that your doctor does know more than you in most cases so you do have to respect all the indications received to the letter.

When talking about niacin and pregnancy we are faced with a case of “Better be safe than sorry”. Although there is no clear proof that niacin can affect women that are pregnant we do know that high doses of this vitamin can cause some problems. Since the woman’s body is changing during pregnancy and we are faced with different nutrition needs, it is better to take in the recommended amount of niacin and give up on all niacin supplementation you might be on. Prenatal vitamins that contain niacin are safe but we should only stick with that. If you do not know if the vitamin supplements you are taking will surpass your RDA, consult a specialist or your family doctor. You will thus gain all the extra information you might be lacking.
