Niacin and Diabetes

Niacin is well known for its cholesterol problems treating capability. We are basically talking about one of the oldest possible drugs used in this case. Vitamin B3 is capable of lowering bad cholesterol levels and raising good cholesterol levels. Now we are also faced with a debate about niacin and diabetes. There are a lot of specialist that are talking about a link between the two but is it justified?

In the middle of the eighties some studies have been performed and the results showed that high niacin doses will increase levels of blood sugar in people that have prediabetes or diabetes. As a result authorities recommended the use of niacin supplements only under strict medical supervision. Most doctors then ended up thinking that niacin was not to be used by individuals that suffer from diabetes. Nowadays we are faced with a different approach because we have 2 big studies to relate to. It has been proven that niacin will only have small effects on hemoglobin A1C and blood sugar.

People that suffer from diabetes are warned by doctors that they are faced with higher cardiovascular risk. Statins are documented to lower LDL levels and to reduce heart attack risk. This makes them the first line of defense in people that suffer from diabetes and want to deal with problems caused by cholesterol. Unfortunately statins are not always enough. Your doctor might end up prescribing niacin as well. This is because a combination of niacin and statins can bring in cardiovascular benefits. To make everything even better, niacin can also be used alone in the event that people can not tolerate statins.

There are some individuals that have problems with niacin side effects. In the event that you take higher doses of niacin (which is usually needed when talking about niacin and diabetes) you might be faced with flushing. The good news is that there are some drugs that can aid in dealing with side effects. There are even some studies performed at the moment that aim to look for combinations between niacin and other drugs in order to gain the best possible benefits.

The key aspect to think about when thinking about niacin and diabetes is that blood sugar needs to be monitored while undergoing treatment. We are not talking about small periods of time. Monitoring needs to take place for a number of months in order to be completely safe. In most cases blood sugar level increases are controlled by changing insulin dosage. In the event that blood sugar levels become too high niacin is replaced with different possible medications.

Niacin is recommended by specialists for treating people that suffer from diabetes and have low levels of HDL. If we pay attention to blood sugar levels and take niacin our cholesterol levels can be controlled. The immediate result stands in a prevention of heart disease, which is usually associated with diabetes.
