Vitamin B3
Food Sources of Niacin and Niacin Supplements
We have seen that a lot of people are not aware of food sources of niacin and will usually turn to niacin supplements when dealing with possible deficiencies. While this might be a good approach, it is highly important to understand that getting vitamin B3 from food is much more recommended than supplementation. This is because a healthy diet is usually enough for us to get all the daily requirements of nutrients that our body needs. Unfortunately, the same can not be said with some conditions that can lead to niacin deficiency.
Niacinamide
Contrary to popular belief, niacinamide is not identical to niacin. In fact, niacinamide is niacin with an extra amide molecule that attached to the initial niacin molecule. Although differences between the two are usually not to be taken into account, one should be considered. Niacin doses that are higher than 50 mg are known to cause skin flushing.
Niacin and Cholesterol
We have seen a lot of people that highlighted the side effects that come with niacin supplement administration although exaggeration is sometimes visible. You should know that niacin is usually very safe and effective when talking about heart disease and the possibility to reduce heart attack risks. To make everything even better, niacin supplements are not at all expensive and should be taken into account when linked with different possible treatments.
Niacin and Diabetes
Niacin is well known for its cholesterol problems treating capability. We are basically talking about one of the oldest possible drugs used in this case. Vitamin B3 is capable of lowering bad cholesterol levels and raising good cholesterol levels. Now we are also faced with a debate about niacin and diabetes. There are a lot of specialist that are talking about a link between the two but is it justified?
Niacin Deficiency
Although rare, niacin deficiency can happen and it is important for us to know how to deal with it in the event that it happens to us. In most cases we are faced with such a condition in countries that are underdeveloped. The most common symptoms visible at first in niacin deficiency are dermatitis, diarrhea and neurological deficits (dementia included). The good news is that niacin deficiency can be discovered and treated thanks to supplementation.
Niacin and Pregnancy
The topic of niacin and pregnancy is not really well researched and we are lacking some important information that have to be taken into account. There are currently no studies available on the impact of high niacin doses on pregnancy. We do not know if niacin overdose can cause problems with the child or the mother. On the other hand when we are dealing with doses of around 35 mg of vitamin B3 daily we are safe. If you are taking supplements containing niacin and you are pregnant here is what you should know.
Niacin Supplements
Niacin supplements are available on the market but you must have caution when taking them. In most cases the required daily requirements of this vitamin is met with a proper diet and (if needed) a good multi-vitamin supplement. Unfortunately some individuals are faced with niacin deficiency and in this case there is a need to take niacin supplements.
Niacin Toxicity
Whenever we are talking about vitamins we are faced with a common believe that there is no way you can have vitamin overdoses. Most people out there think that vitamins are safe and may end up taking too much supplementation. The truth is that there are different vitamins that can cause a lot of problems if overdoses are present. One of them is Niacin, which is responsible for a lot of discomforts when taken in too much. The problem is that your doctor might have to give you an overdose of niacin in the event that your LDL cholesterol level is too high.
Vitamin B3 - Niacin - Niacinamide
Niacin is another name for vitamin B3, a water soluble vitamin that is highly important for the human body, especially in dealing with preventing pellagra. We are basically talking about a compound that is organic. Its chemical formula is C6H5NO2. Niacin is a pyridine derivative and we are faced with different other vitamin B3 forms. The good news is that you do not have to worry about the various forms because all of them share the same results and impact on the human body.
