Vitamin B2 - Riboflavin

Vitamin B2, which is also called riboflavin, is produced in the body itself in the intestinal part and it is also quickly absorbed, even though only small quantities are stored. Therefore the body needs constant supply of this vitamin. The supplementation of this vitamin is much more important as it has numerous benefits on the whole. The main role of this vitamin is to make the best use of oxygen and the process of the amino acids, carbohydrates and fatty acids. This vitamin is also vital in activating the pyridoxine and thus it helps to produce a compound called niacin and also aids in the functioning of the adrenal glands.

It is chiefly responsible for cell respiration, growth, production of antibodies to fight against diseases, formation of the red blood cells and many more. Though it is a need of rapid growth, riboflavin’s function is required when the amount of protein consumed is high and it best works for the benefit of nails, skin and hair. It helps in relieving the eye fatigue syndrome and also, it might be helpful in the treatment and also to an extent in prevention of cataracts. This vitamin supplement is far more essential in the better health of the mucous membrane that is present in the digestive tract and thus aids in the absorption of vitamin B6 and iron.

Riboflavin deficiency leads to sores, cracks in some areas of the mouth, skin lesions, irritation of the tongue and the mouth, hair loss, very poor digestion, slow mental response, retarded growth, dermatitis, dizziness, insomnia, light sensitivity and so on. Burning feet can as well be pinpointing towards a deficiency. So to avoid these ill effects, regular supplement of this vitamin B2 should be supplied to the body with the correct amount of dosage. For some the dosage might be increased just in case of a typical syndrome. Otherwise if the dosage exceeds the recommended value, then it may show its side effects. For male it is up to 1.6 mg a day and for female it is up to 1.2 mg a day. A level up to 50 mg is also allowed and does not cause side effects. As an indication, a usual yellow discoloration of urine ca be noticed when the amount of riboflavin is taken in excess, but it is not a strange happening and it is absolutely normal. This vitamin can be best taken with vitamin C and vitamin B groups.
