Uses for Riboflavin

Riboflavin is an important part of a nutritionally sound diet. It may be necessary for some individuals to take supplements simply to maintain healthy levels. Other individuals may use riboflavin to reduce their risk of certain diseases. Some others may use riboflavin supplements as a treatment for existing conditions. In any of these cases if the use involves sustained use you should consult your physician before beginning the usage. There may be conflicts with existing treatments.

Riboflavin supplements are generally taken in capsule form. The milligrams of the capsules may vary. Care should be exhibited when using riboflavin supplements as there are toxicity concerns with high-levels. In general you should adhere to your physician's prescription or the directions of the supplements packaging. In most uses for riboflavin the individual will likely take the supplement with their meal. The standard dosage is 100mg per capsule, though the number of capsules and timing of the use may vary depending on the circumstances.

Most individuals will likely never experience a deficiency of riboflavin. Uses for riboflavin supplements to achieve a healthy level of nutrition are generally limited to a few groups. The most common of these are individuals that do not have adequate diet. These individuals generally must alter their diet in the long-term, but in the short term may be prescribed riboflavin supplements. Another group that sometimes experiences deficiency even when adequate diet is present is alcoholics. These individuals may require riboflavin supplements. Individuals that engage in strenuous physical activity may require riboflavin supplements in addition to their diet. Some of these uses for riboflavin supplements become understandable when considering the vitamin is water-soluble.

In addition to simply maintaining healthy levels of riboflavin in the body there are other uses for riboflavin. These include reducing the risk of certain diseases. These treatments and any others should be discussed with your physician before beginning. In at least one study higher levels of riboflavin consumption was linked to lower instances of cataracts. It is also possible that some individuals may benefit from the use of riboflavin supplements as a treatment for some health problems. Some research has produced evidence that seems to suggest riboflavin may be a good treatment of migraine headaches. You can begin to learn more about the uses for riboflavin by searching online at the Linus Pauling Institute's Micronutrient Information Center and by searching for “uses for riboflavin” in your favorite search engine.
