Riboflavin Deficiency Symptoms

Riboflavin is an important nutritional element that is more commonly known as vitamin B2. It plays an important role in many bodily functions including growth and development. Deficiency of riboflavin is called ariboflavinosis. In general it is a rare condition and generally is only found in instances where other water-soluble vitamins are deficient. There are a number of notable riboflavin deficiency symptoms. Some are mild and temporary while others are more serious. There are some long term risks that have been connected with deficiency. If you think you may be suffering from riboflavin deficiency consult your physician regarding being tested for adequate levels.

There are some classes of individuals that may be more susceptible to deficiency and if they experience any of the riboflavin deficiency symptoms they may need to seek medical care. Among these groups are alcoholics. These individuals actually have a reduced capacity for the absorption of riboflavin and the utilization of it in their bodies. Anorexic individuals may also be at increased risk as a result of insufficient consumption. Individuals who do not drink milk or eat dairy products may experience riboflavin deficiency symptoms as well.

Some of the most common riboflavin deficiency symptoms include general irritation and dryness in the moist and mucus areas. For example the throat may be sore; the tongue may swell. Other symptoms include cracking at the corners of the mouth. The skin may become moist and scaly as well. Other less noticeable riboflavin deficiency symptoms include reduced red blood cell count and a reduced capacity of the body to utilize the vitamin B6. Many of these symptoms may correct once proper nutritional levels are established in the individual that is suffering from the deficiency.

In addition to direct riboflavin deficiency symptoms, deficiency of riboflavin has been linked to increased risk of a number of diseases. Preeclampsia and eclampsia are among the most notable. While deficiency has been connected to an increased risk of disease, riboflavin is being used to prevent and treat some other health problems. Studies have shown that individuals that consume higher-levels of riboflavin had reduced chances of developing cataracts. Other studies have shown cause to suspect riboflavin may help in the treatment of migraine headaches. It is important to consult your physician before ending any treatment or beginning any new treatments. You can learn more about the medical risks of riboflavin deficiency and health benefits of sufficient riboflavin consumption online or by asking your physician. If you think that you may benefit from beginning a riboflavin supplement program consult your physician.
