Advantages of Supplementing Riboflavin

Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, is one of the vitamins that are often not present in the western diet. This vitamin acts along with vitamin B1 to help in carbohydrate and fat metabolisms. You need riboflavin to increase the amount of energy that you have. There are many benefits of supplementing riboflavin in your diet. Of these, the fact that it increases your energy is the main one. Other benefits of supplementing riboflavin include preventing corneal ulcers. Riboflavin is very good for your eyes and it helps the tissue of your eye heal within a short time. There are other benefits of supplementing riboflavin which include protecting your body from drugs as well as chemicals in the environment that you are in. These chemicals could have toxic effects on your body, which can have harmful effects on the long run. There are many diseases that can be prevented by supplementing your diet with riboflavin.

One of the main benefits of supplementing riboflavin is that it helps with psoriasis. This means that you skin can heal faster and the effects of the diseases will be less severe. Riboflavin can also help neutralize any harmful free radicals that might be present in your body. This is because riboflavin has antioxidant properties. This antioxidant helps by offering an electron to the free radicals. If these antioxidants are not present, the free radicals draw electrons that they require from other cells, which could cause undue damage. This also helps reduce the cholesterol build up and thus reduce the occurrence of cancer on the long run. There are many other benefits of supplementing riboflavin as they also help other important physiological processes to occur. These include helping transforming amino acids to neurotransmitters which help regulate proper mood and memory along with cognitive skills. Riboflavin also helps the body to make red blood cells to carry oxygen.

You will need supplements of riboflavin if you are pregnant or nursing. There are sulfa drugs which also require more riboflavin. Some people who consume a diet high in refined foods with a lot of sugar and junk will also need to consume riboflavin supplements. Even those who exercise a lot need this as exercise has the effect of depleting the riboflavin level in your body. Good sources of riboflavin include whole grains, spinach, cheese, liver and kidney. Even mushrooms and eggs tend to be high sources of riboflavin.
