Vitamin B12 Overdose
In the early 20th century doctors were able to save a patient in severe condition using vitamin B12. The patient was not able to move, only lied in the bed and definitely would have died. But the B12 shots bought him back to life. Such powerful was the shot that the patient was able to get up and could walk in a week’s time. So, it is necessary to take drugs, but these should be taken in appropriate amount so that it doesn’t become a pain for us.
An overdose of Vitamin B12 is rare incident, but the ill effects are equally dangerous. The side effects of high dose of B12 shots are difficult to notice if the patient has a healthy pair of kidneys. In case there is something wrong with the kidney and the patient is subjected to high dose of B12, there are fair chances that his body parts become numb or severe itching may start. There is even a chance that the patient is open to cancer attack.
A slight overdose will cause allergy among newborn babies. It is found that about 20-30 percent of people over the age group of fifty are vulnerable to such an overdose. The mere fact behind it is that the organisms are not capable to absorb the B12. In old aged people, the stomach enzyme does not show up in required quantity, which limits the absorption of B12 vitamin.
Other symptoms of B12 overdose include side effects like excitement, heart pain, giddiness and severe headache. Since B12 is found largely in meat and dairy products, vegetarians are more likely to be exposed to deficiency of B12. The most dreadful impact of overdose of B12 is that it opens the gateway for several types of cancers
Thus, although overdose of vitamin B12 occurs rarely, sometimes it becomes dangerous for human beings, particularly for pregnant women and newborn babies. There is less chance of overdose of vitamin B12 when a person doesn't have any chronic disease and is healthy. If in case, someone suffers from overdose of B12, treatment involves supportive care, consisting of treating the symptoms due to Overdose. And, of course, the treatment includes involves stopping the vitamin treatment and then resuming it at a more appropriate dose, if necessary. Furthermore it is important proper medical attention is provided to the patient as overlooking this may cause drastic consequences in near future.
