Vitamin A Overdose
A case of vitamin A overdose results in Hypervitaminosis A, which is a medical condition where a high level of vitamin A is stored in the body. This excess storage of the vitamin can lead to toxicity that can have many adverse results. All kinds of vitamin intake should be done in moderate levels. Medical science has prescribed recommended levels of intake for every kind of vitamin. It is important to follow these limits as a high vitamin A overdose may affect certain organs of the body or give rise to certain undesired symptoms. However, these limits may not be applicable to people who have a vitamin deficiency problem and are being treated for the same.
There could be 4 main adverse effects caused by vitamin A overdose that we need to be aware of. An overdose to women when they are pregnant can result in birth defects in their offspring. There might be cases in which women receive a high dose of the vitamin in order to treat some other ailment. For instance, some severe forms of acne and other skin related disorders are treated with a high vitamin A overdose. Women in their child bearing age are however advised to use effective birth control measures in order to prevent a pregnancy from occurring during their treatment.
The second adverse effect of vitamin A overdose is reduced density of bone mineral, which may result in Osteoporosis. According to research about 10 million Americans suffer from this condition. It is also estimated that 80% of those that suffer from this condition are women. Another 18 million suffer a milder form of reduced bone density syndrome which is the preceding stage to the development of osteoporosis. Researchers have found that the people most affected by osteoporosis live in northern Europe, which is also the population which has a high intake of vitamin A. They have suggested however that this finding could also be due to the fact that low levels of exposure of this population to the sun could result in a decreased level of biosynthesis of vitamin D which could also cause osteoporosis. Other factors that could increase the risk would include smoking, drinking and inadequate intake of calcium in the diet.
The other adverse effects of vitamin A overdoses are liver abnormalities and certain disorders of the central nervous system. Since there are many complications involved in an overdose of this vitamin, it is necessary to ensure that adequate levels of intake are strictly maintained.
