Vitamin A Content of Maize

Maize is a good dietary source of vitamin A. Since maize is a crop that is grown in so many different countries in the world, including many of the third world nations, the vitamin A content of maize is an important factor in ensuring that people of the world over a healthy life by using a healthy diet. There has also been considerable research done in finding ways to enhance the levels of provitamin A in maize. Provitamin A is a precursor that converts into vitamin A inside the body after it is consumed. This research is of primary importance as it helps to make good nutritious food available to millions of people, especially those that live in developing and under-developed regions of the world.

The research involved in enhancing the vitamin A content of maize has identified a naturally mutated enzyme that promotes the presence of provitamin A in maize. Normally there is a lot of ambiguity and we notice expenses involved in short listing the varieties of maize that would have the highest content of provitamin A. The researchers have now found a radically new way of selecting parent stock, which is much less expensive and takes away much of the guess work.

This research has a lot of relevance to the problem of ensuring the health of populations in many developing countries. Vitamin A deficiency is one of the main causes of the prevalence of eye diseases and many other health disorders prevalent among these populations. It is estimated that 250 million people in these areas suffer from health problems that can be directly attributed to the lack of vitamin A in their diets. Another 40 million children suffer from eye diseases for the very same reason. By increasing the vitamin A content of maize grown in these regions, it would be possible to cure most of the major health problems in these regions.

One of the main problems so far in screening the parent stock for ensuring a high vitamin A content of maize has been the prohibitive costs involved. It costs about $50 to $75 to screen a single sample of parent stock. Since it would be required to sample hundreds or more plants at least twice a year, the cost involved would become exorbitant. The new technique called quantitative trait loci or QTL mapping is much more affordable and cost effective. With these new scientific advances in food research, it is now possible to ensure that people around the world have nutritious food and live a healthy life.
