Do dried apricots contain vitamin A?

The majority of juices that are sold in western countries are pasteurized. The main function of this is to prevent the formation of alcohol form the sugars in the juice. This natural enzyme action is inhibited in this way. Another function of pasteurization is to protect the juices from being contaminated by harmful bacteria and mould. There are a number of deaths that have been attributed to the fact that unpasteurized apple juices could contain E coli. After this happened, the food health authorities made sure that all fruit and vegetable juices that are available carry a label saying whether or not the juice has been pasteurized. After that, a new rule was brought up saying that all fruit juices that are sold should be pasteurized.

Do dried apricots contain vitamin a? Before we make an attempt to answer this question, the first thing that we should check is how the apricots are being processed. 4/5 of the weight of the apricot is lost when it is dried. Drying aims to remove only the water that is present in the apricots and not the nutrients in the apricot. If you compare the nutrient content of dry and ordinary apricot, dried apricot has 12 times the iron, 7 items the fiber and 5 times the vitamin A. This is a clear indication that process does not remove the vitamin content of the apricot.

When you compare the apricots weight to weight, 3.5 ounces of dried apricot provide 12700 IU of vitamin A, which is more than double the daily requirement for an adult. The same amount of apricot also contains a third of the daily iron requirement that is enough for women. There have been a number of studies that say that dried apricots can be used to help anemic patients as these dried apricots are as effective as liver, kidneys and eggs when used to treat anemia that is caused by lack of iron in the diet.

Do dried apricots contain vitamin A at the expense of some other important vitamin or mineral? For this you have to study the processing procedure. The apricots are first treated with sulfur dioxide to make sure that they don’t turn brown. This chemical might cause some sort of serious chemical reaction and might even cause anaphylactic shock if a lot is taken. On the other hand, you should not fear this as it is not a real concern with 99.99% of people.
