Benefits of Vitamin A

The benefits of Vitamin A to the body are innumerable. Vitamin A has in fact been called the miracle vitamin due to its immunity and growth enhancing properties. It rejuvenates the skin and makes it supple and hence is loved by beauty conscious women of all ages. By improving the overall condition of the skin, it slows down the aging process.

The following are some of the benefits of Vitamin A that are the most important and well-known in medical science.

1. Vitamin A acts as an anti-oxidant and helps in canceling out the cell-damaging effects of free radicals. Fruits and vegetables containing vitamin A are good sources of anti-oxidants. It is known that people who eat more fruits and vegetables generally have a lower risk of heart disease.

2. Vitamin A is essential to maintain good vision. The retinyl groups associated with vitamin A are required for the proper functioning of the retina to convert light entering the eye into signals that the brain can translate as images. Vitamin A is also essential for preventing night blindness

3. Vitamin A is responsible for the promotion and formation of strong bones in the body. However, an excess of the vitamin can lead to a decrease in bone density, which would result in osteoporosis.

4. The benefits of Vitamin A include protection against bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. It enhances the functioning of the immune system and hence the capacity to fight disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

5. Vitamin A also guards against heart disease and stroke. It also lowers the level of blood cholesterol which is one of the main causes of heart disease.

6. As stated earlier, vitamin A improves the condition of the skin considerably and makes it look youthful. Moreover, conditions like acne, psoriasis and other skin disorders respond well to a treatment based on vitamin A. It should however be noted that an excess dosage of vitamin A could give rise to birth defects. Therefore women in their child bearing years need to take birth control measures while undergoing vitamin A treatment for skin disorders.

7. Lastly, the benefits of Vitamin A include the improvement in the condition of children who suffer from respiratory problems. Vitamin A supplements are also known to be effective in helping people who are suffering from glaucoma and measles.

As seen from this list above, the benefits of Vitamin A to the body are manifold and help in the maintenance of good health.
