Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes
If you want to learn sports nutrition for endurance athletes you have to understand that it is not at all easy. You do need to know a lot of things about nutrition and your body. Keep in mind that every body is different. You will need different quantities of protein, carbohydrates and even some minerals when compared to other people. On the other hand, there are some facts about sports nutrition for endurance athletes that you must always take into consideration.
The biggest risk that an endurance athlete has is dehydration. This is even more of a risk when you compete or simply train in a climate that is too hot. The longer you exercise or compete the higher this risk is. Due to this reason you must make sure that you take in enough fluids. There is also a need that you eat right as an endurance athlete’s nutrition plan is highly important if he wants performance. We can say that sports nutrition for endurance athletes relies on fluids and foods.
The first fact you need to understand about fluids is the fact that you have to replace what you lose through sweating. The problem is that electrolytes are also lost through this and if you do not replace what is lost you might end up with dehydration. You should know that the best way possible to replenish your natural electrolytes and water supply is a good sports nutrition drink. All throughout the day you must make sure that you get enough fluids. All your training will be in vain if you will not be properly hydrated. Before any competition you need to have special care. Make sure that 2 hours before the event you are properly hydrated and 20 minutes before the event take one cup of water. The key to competing well and staying properly hydrated is realizing how much you will sweat and how fast. Unfortunately you can only properly understand this part of sports nutrition for endurance athletes by trying it out on yourself. A good idea would be to measure your weight and see how much is lost when you compete. Keep in mind that the weight lost must be put back on. You will mostly lose water and electrolytes. Many endurance athletes that are not experienced might also have to deal with over hydration. This happens when you drink too much water. You must only drink what you lose and more will cause performance drops.
The second fact that has to be understood is that food is equally important for an endurance athlete. Special attention must be used when dealing with carbohydrates. This is because they will provide you with fuel and energy. The first step that you have to take is to eat right. Before the race you need to eat food that is high in energy giving carbs. Examples can be given in pastas, fruits, vegetables, rice, cereals and bread. In this case 70% of what you eat needs to be carbs. When in a competition your body loses sodium. What you lose needs to be taken back. All endurance athletes need to have a nutrition plan that properly includes good quantities of sodium. The best fact is that you can easily replenish your sodium needs with foods that are high in this ingredient. You can even have nuts, snacks, pretzels and soups without having any problem. Right after you train you need carbohydrates so that glycogen levels get back to regular amounts as fast as possible. A good idea would be to eat bananas, fruit smoothies or yoghurt. If you take all this into account you will see that all will be perfect. On the other hand, if your meals are not good enough you will need sports nutrition supplements.
