Sports Nutrition Drinks

Sports nutrition drinks are basically beverages that are created in order to help athletes rehydrate and recuperate carbohydrates, electrolytes and various other nutrients that can disappear when competing or just training. Proper rehydration is promoted through electrolyte replacement. This is highly important in exercising because the immediate result is a delaying of the appearance of fatigue. Carbohydrates are always needed when working out because your body uses them in order to maintain high performance and energy levels. At the end of the day you should know that using sports nutrition drinks can only bring in a number of benefits that you should never neglect if you are an athlete.

There are 3 major types of sports nutrition drinks: isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic. Isotonic sports nutrition drinks include a combination of nutrients and water that is similar to what you will find in the human body. They also have around 8% added sugar. Hypertonic sports nutrition drinks do not include so much water and have more added sugar. Hypotonic sports nutrition drinks have more water and less sugar. The majority of such products come with around 15 g of sugar in one eighth of an ounce of serving.

One of the biggest problems that can appear with sports nutrition drinks is water intoxication. This is possible, especially when we are faced with an electrolytes imbalance in our body. The good news is that water intoxication is very hard to happen. We are talking about a very rare condition. In most cases it appears when you are working out really hard and you sweat a lot. Due to sweating water is constantly removed from your system together with electrolytes. You drink a lot of water in order to deal with heavy sweating but it might not be enough as this does not bring back electrolytes. As a result we are faced with a low electrolytes concentration, which can lead to it affecting our central nervous system.

Most sports nutrition drinks on the market will give you both water and electrolytes in a concentration that is very similar to the one that can be found inside your body. The problem is that there are many products that offer a low concentration of electrolytes. If you train really hard and you drink such products then you might be faced with water intoxication. Rehydration is really important so you have to choose your sports nutrition drinks wisely.
