Rutin

What is rutin? It is a member of a class of nutrients called bioflavonoids. These nutrients are water-soluble and that means that any excess does not get stored in the body. Bioflavonoids are known antioxidants. As more research is performed on this nutrient group, the more benefits we are discovering. Rutin is commonly found in fresh citrus fruits. Therefore, it is easy to get enough into your diet by increasing your intake of fresh citrus and natural citrus juices containing pulp. Fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh lemonade are great drinks for adding rutin into your diet. So does drinking green tea as this contains a decent amount of rutin as well.

We need rutin in our diet. As an antioxidant, it helps to protect the body against free radicals. In addition, rutin is found to have anti-inflammatory properties. When health issues such as hemorrhoids, poor circulation, varicose veins, appear rutin supplementation is indicated. Furthermore, rutin and vitamin C are dependent on one another. The body cannot metabolize vitamin C properly without rutin present. Therefore, a diet lacking in rutin is usually vitamin C deficient as well. This in turn affects the entire immune system. If our bodies are to perform well, we need to be sure we are getting enough rutin and other nutrients in our diets.

Rutin helps with the above-mentioned health problems by reducing inflammation, helping veins and arteries stay open by maintaining their structure and by helping the body to metabolize vitamin C into a form that it can use. In addition, rutin helps the body to combat free radicals. You can take rutin supplements. They are available in most chain drug stores and many health food stores. You may even be able to find them in your grocery stores pharmacy aisle. The recommended dosage for rutin is in the area of 200 mg to 600 mg per day. The most common dosage found in tablet form is 500 mg. It would be extremely difficult to overdose on rutin as it is water-soluble and any excess is eliminated through the waste processing of the body.

When you consider how important it is to get enough rutin in your diet, the question of not if you should supplement but how should be considered. We can all benefit from adding another serving of citrus to our diet. How about adding a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice to your breakfast. This is a very tasty way to help your body stay healthy.
