Secrets behind Apple Picking

Apple picking is not a simple task, and apples are harvested by a certain plan. There are different types of apples, some are early picked, others are the apples that last though the winter, but regardless of the type, if you want an apple to resist, you will have to hand pick-it form the tree.

If you are at your first apple picking experience, the first thing you need is a V shaped ladder, tall enough, but be careful if you are working on surfaces that are slippery and not horizontal : always place the ladder on the most horizontal portion, so you’ll have a support. You will also need very clean depositing caskets if you want to keep the apples throughout winter.

Most people think it’s enough to shake the apple’s branches and pick up the apples that fall on the ground, but the experienced apple pickers assure us this technique is wrong: apple picking is done according to specific instructions depending on the apple sort, the early apples have to be consumed and the ones that ripe in the autumn can be preserved if picked right. You need to pick up apples from their little tails and clean them from leaves. Do not hit or harm them and place them carefully in the picking bag. They must fall on smooth materials and that’s why apple picking is not done in plastic baskets. After the picking bag is full, each apple is carefully placed in the depositing caskets, without damaging them. The casket will be placed in a dark room, well ventilated until November and moist enough, if possible directly on the earth.

If you have very tall trees you will use longer ladders and two supporting pylons. It’s a real technique to place your ladder right. The pylons will be infixed in the dirt, in a V position compared to the outline of the ladder and this way the pylons will sustain the horizontal nails you step on when you climb up the ladder. The apples that present defects or those than entered into putrefaction will get thrown away. Make sure you have clean and dry hands when you start picking and you will not put your hands on apples that fell on the ground. These will get gathered in the end because they have a bad juice that will damage winter apples. These apples serve as base for apple alcohol or vinegar or for apple pies.
