Rotten Apple
Growing fruit can be an extremely challenging and rewarding pastime and can help you save a great deal of money in the long run as you can draw fruits from your own stock. With some careful planning and dedicated commitment you will be able to perhaps turn it into a business venture. For example, you can sell your own apples or perhaps sell seeds for trees so that other people can grow their own produce.
There is nothing quite so frustrating than your hard work failing and the last thing you want is for all of the time and energy you have so lovingly invested in your apple growing venture to be for nothing due to the various problems that can beset apples. Sadly a rotten apple is an all too common occurrence for the novice apple grower and you have to note that in the grand scheme of things, they are also rather delicate fruits.
One of the major causes for the dreaded rotten apple syndrome is the presence of apple maggots, larvae that is laid by the apple fly in apples. The damage that these nasty creatures can cause to apples range from severe to critical and once the rot has set in, the damage cannot be reversed. Therefore, if you want to avoid having a whole bunch of rotten apples it is vital then that you exercise the necessary precautions to prevent the development of the maggots.
In one of those remarkable moments of “So Obvious it’s Ingenious” we saw that the most effective method for the elimination and prevention of apple maggots is the use of rubber red balls. Simply seeing the approximate size and colour of the balls, the flies are none the wiser and so they quite happily lay their eggs on them. Unable to actually find a food source, the maggots will then starve and mercifully die.
As frustrating as the maggots can be, please do not fall into the trap of using pesticides because a rotten apple will be the least of your problems in this case! Pesticides come with a wide number of different health risks and dangers, posing a severe threat to the well being of both humans and the environment alike. In addition, the pesticides will often end up causing your apple tree to fade and die, which is an undesirable outcome especially for a long term basis.
