Bad Apples

Apples are tasty, succulent fruits that come with a remarkable taste that is only matched by the sheer range of health benefits that they offer us. As that cliché says, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, and this actually rings true because of the number of nutrients, minerals and vitamins that are found in apples. Please note that this is true when talking about all types of apples and there is no singular type or genus of apple that can lay claim to being the healthiest of them all.

Friendship they say, is a two way street and to that effect we need to ensure that we reciprocate whenever a friend helps us out. When it comes to our dear friends, apples, whilst they are fantastic at providing us with remarkable health benefits, they do not seem capable of effectively dealing with their own health issues. Apples are extremely vulnerable to infection pests and diseases and all of this can have a seriously detrimental impact on the final outcome of the apples.

One of the most problematic of these is the so called “apple maggots”, which are simply larvae of flies that will make their home in the warm, moist environment located within apple trees and as they develop and mature, they will eat away at the innards of the apples, thereby making them inedible. These little critters can turn all of your good work into nothing more than a bunch of utterly useless and bad apples and they will tend to cause damage in one of two ways. The less severe of these will be where the maggot causes the apple to collapse slightly within the middle, thereby causing a “dimpling” effect (the apple’s face appears to have been caved in.)
This is caused when the maggots grow and develop. However, as they fully mature, they will need a food source and they do this by burrowing through the remainder of the flesh, eating away. This results in the decay of the apple as a whole. This sort of damage can be very easily spotted by the brown trails left in the apple itself.

If you want to avoid bad apples then you may want to make use of red balls! Yes, that’s right! The apple flies will simply assume that the ball is an apple and thus will plant their eggs while sparing your apples.
