The Role of Protein

The first thing we must realize when thinking about the role of protein in our body is the fact that we are referring to one very important structural and functional component of a human body cell. Protein is basically the most important material that is needed for our body in order to build hormones, muscles, enzymes and improve the immune system.

Every protein is made out of amino acids. Basically all proteins have a structure that is made out of different combinations of some of 20 amino acids. 8 of them can not be naturally manufactured by the human body. This basically means that you will take them in from what you eat. These are the amino acids that are labeled as “essential amino acids”. Every single one is very important and has to be taken in daily from what we eat or supplementation. This brings us to the most important role of protein that has to be mentioned: being an energy source.

Protein is very important when thinking about tissue maintenance, repair and growth. The problem is that it is not stored in our body. This basically means that it can not be immediately used as energy. On the other hand, if your body can not use fats or carbs then it will use protein. If a diet does not contain enough carbohydrates then the body will shift and start using proteins in order to repair muscles and growth. In this case protein is basically used as an energy source.

The role of protein is to aid us in different ways. In order for it to be able to do this we need to have enough in our body. According to nutritionists, 15% of all energy intake that we see daily must come from protein. We thus have 2 possible protein sources: animal and plant products. It is recommended that we take in more animal protein because it is better than plant protein. The problem is that many good protein sources also contain too much fat. This is exactly why most athletes turn to protein supplements as main sources of protein in their diet. On the other hand, you should know that there are also low fat alternatives possible, especially when dealing with dairy products. The role of protein is to help us out but if we do not take in enough we will be faced with problems. Unfortunately, sometimes protein supplements are required, especially if we live a highly active life.
