Protein
Diets that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates are very popular these days and it is easy to understand why. This is especially true for bodybuilders and different athletes. You will constantly see them consuming protein shakes and different protein supplements. Also, many people that want to achieve weight loss will set their sights on protein. We are talking about one component that is found in every single cell of the human body. You should also know that nails and hair are basically made out mostly out of protein and this nutrient is used by our body in order to repair and build tissue. Protein is also necessary in order to create hormones, enzymes and various body chemicals. It is an important part of cartilage, skin, bones, blood and muscles.
Protein is considered to be a macronutrient. This basically means that our body will require large quantities daily. Minerals and vitamins are needed in small quantities. The problem is that your body will store carbs and fat but will not store any amount of protein. When it needs a new supply there is no storage that can offer it. On the other hand this does not mean that you should consume protein the entire day. The hard truth is that the human body does not really need as much protein as we might imagine. It is also true that larger quantities will bring in extra benefits and this must be taken into consideration.
Most people think that extra protein will build more muscle. The truth is not exactly like that as more exercise is needed in order to gain more muscle. Our body requires protein in order to work well and if you take in more protein you will not get stronger. On the other hand, extra protein is beneficial for muscle building if it is a part of a well balanced diet.
It is very important that you pay close attention to your diet. It is not true that a high protein and low carbohydrate diet is that beneficial. It will aid in different cases but you do need to show caution. Pay attention that you do not reach ketosis as that is not really healthy for your body. Protein is highly important in your nutrition plan but do not neglect good fats and carbohydrates, not to mention minerals, fiber and vitamins. In most situations protein supplements will only be needed by bodybuilders and athletes in general.
