Protein Drink and Racing Faster

There is a common believe that considers a protein drink to be a great source of energy for people that are going to participate to a race. We have seen a lot of athletes (mostly cyclists or runners) that consume a protein drink right before they start racing. The problem is that this is not at all a good approach. According to a study that was performed in 2006 by McMaster University, drinking a sports drink that has added protein powder in it will not help you in gaining better performance. In fact, it will not aid you much. On the other hand, the same can not be said about carbohydrate drinks since they do improve your performance in any athletic event that is to last more than 1 hour.

Any competition that requires you to compete for over one hour is different than others that need you to put in effort for less time. This is because the body will need more calories and fluids. To make everything even more complicated, if the racing event you will participate in will last over 3 hours then you will also have to take in salt as the body will need it. All calories come from proteins, fats and carbs. If you go through exercise that is very intense the muscles will use carbs in a more efficient manner than fat or protein. Drinking a protein drink before such an event simply dos not make sense. You should know that protein drinks also sometimes taste bad and will not be refreshing when compared to sports drinks or water. This basically means that you will not drink that much and you might end up dehydrated.

Although a protein drink will not aid you before your racing event, we can not say the same thing about the period of time after exercising hard. It has been proven that a protein drink that is consumed after the exercise is over will aid in recovering faster. Taking protein while you exercise is not really bringing in as many benefits as you might believe. We recommend that you consider a drink that mostly contains carbs if you want to have a better racing experience. Protein drinks should be consumed after the racing session is over. Also, do not forget about the fact that the body will also need salt if the event will take too much time.
