Do We Need Protein Supplements

This is one question that surely appears in the life of an athlete. We are faced with a very simple answer. If we do not take in enough protein through what we need then we do need protein supplements. If not then we should not even consider such products. The problem is that there are many factors that will influence our body and the quantity of protein that is needed on a daily basis.

The truth is that we can not give you a precise amount of protein that should be taken in daily. As a general measure we can say that you will have to consume a minimum of 1.5 grams of protein for each kg of lean body weight. On the other hand, two other important factors have to be taken into account. The first one is exercising. If you are practicing a sport that is very intense (for instance, bodybuilding) you will need more protein daily. Professional bodybuilders will let you know this as often as they can. The reason behind this statement stands in the fact that after a hard workout your muscles are ruptured to some extent. Protein is required in order to repair damaged muscle tissue and eventually build more muscle cells. We get bigger muscles when new muscle cells are created. If we are not faced with ruptures then the body will not produce extra cells. In the event that you are practicing bodybuilding you should know that there is a huge chance that your body will need protein supplements. This is because the amount of protein you will require daily is very hard to meet through what you eat alone.

The type of protein that the supplements include is the second important factor we need to consider. There are 4 main types of protein supplements when talking about the type of protein included: egg protein supplements, whey protein supplements, soy protein supplements and casein protein supplements. All of them have different ways of helping because of the time needed by the body in order to absorb them. For instance, whey protein is very easily absorbed by our body. This makes whey protein supplements perfect to take after a good workout. On the other hand, the same can not be said about casein supplements as they will be digested at a slower rate.

As a general rule of thumb we can say that you will need protein supplements if you are an athlete. Living a life that is highly active will bring in the need to supplement your regular nutrition plan.
