Prostate Cancer is no longer an alien concept but has been crowned with the dark crow of a deadly murderer. But certainly there are various methods of treatments available in the market. Thanks to the extraordinary development in the field of medical science. However, at the advanced stages of the ailment, no medicine or treatment can cast that magic spell of ‘get well soon’.

Surgery is one of the most common methods of treating Prostate Cancer but the risk factor is always there. If the Prostate cancer is in advanced stages, there are chances that various complications may arise due to the surgery. It is therefore always suggested that you must talk to your doctor before you decide to have a surgery. A prostate cancer surgery simply means that the surgeon is going to cut out the cancerous segment of the prostate gland. This may sound simple but by nature, it is complicated. The risk factors associated with the surgery are discussed below.

• Impotence: This is perhaps one of the most serious consequences of a Prostate Cancer surgery. While removing the cancer cells from the prostate gland, the nerves governing the erection of the penis can be damaged and this can lead to impotence. This is a serious risk and your partner must be fully aware of the consequences. So, it becomes necessary to talk with your partner as well.

• Incontinence: A Prostate Cancer surgery can lead to a situation of incontinence. It is a situation where the patient loses almost all the control over the passing urine. This is not a permanent complication and generally disappears in a couple of weeks but under exceptional situations, this situation may not be cured.

• Urinary leakage: Almost a same situation like that of incontinence, however, under the situation of urinary leakage, the patient generally has some control over the urinary functionality. This is again a short lived complication but can in some cases become a permanent issue.

A Prostate Cancer surgery can be associated with pain and discomfort in the later stages and a patient may have to seek help from nurses and dear and near ones during urination. This can however be considered as a small cost for a cancer free life in the later years. Prostate Cancer can be of different kinds depending upon the stage of the disease and you need to consult properly with the oncologist. Think twice and act wise before you opt for a surgery as this can lead to both emotional and physical suffering!
