Best Prenatal Vitamins

Living in the 21st century, when society is more focused than ever before on nutrition and health, mothers-to-be and women trying for a pregnancy now enjoy a great number of options when choosing prenatal vitamins. Science has repeatedly shown that one of the most important factors of a healthy pregnancy is a well-balanced diet, rich with nutrients necessary for both mother and unborn child. It is of the utmost importance for a woman to choose the best prenatal vitamins available on the market today for their needs. Unfortunately, not all of the available prenatal vitamins on the market today contain the generally recommend dosages of the various vitamins and minerals essential to maintain or prepare for a healthy pregnancy. This is due to the regrettable fact that it is not the United States Food and Drug Administration's responsibility to regulate the content of vitamins and dietary supplements.

The best prenatal vitamins should contain appropriate dosages of the essential nutrients for pregnancy, particularly folic acid, iron, and calcium. The folic acid content in the best prenatal vitamins falls between 800 and 1,000 micrograms (mcg). The amount of iron contained in the optimal multivitamins should measure around between 27 and 60 milligrams (mg). The included calcium content is more of a personal choice, because calcium can easily be obtained through food alone. Most prenatal vitamins contain around 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium, but some may contain more or less. As pills containing calcium tend to be bulkier and more difficult to swallow, some mothers-to-be may opt for a prenatal vitamin without calcium.

An extremely important factor to consider when choosing a prenatal vitamin is the amount of Vitamin A in the supplement. A developing fetus is particularly sensitive to Vitamin A. An excessive dose can cause devastating birth defects or even a miscarriage.

However, a mother-to-be should not choose a prenatal vitamin based solely on the contents of the formula. One must also consider the vitamin’s ability to be absorbed by the body. In addition, individual women may differ in their needs for a prenatal vitamin due to such factors as past medical history, dietary needs, etc. In essence, the pragmatic solution for finding the best prenatal vitamins is to seek the professional advice of a doctor or midwife. A medical professional is qualified to suggest either an over-the-counter formula or prescribe a pharmaceutical formula based on an expecting woman’s individual needs.
