Benefits Of Prenatal Vitamins

There are so many benefits of prenatal vitamins that they would not fit onto a single page. There are volumes of reason to take prenatal vitamins and not a single good reason not to. Massive amounts of research have proven a direct link between proper vitamin intake and the health and well being of the mother and fetus. Discussed below are some of the most well known benefits of taking prenatal vitamins.

Increased energy is one of the main benefits. Pregnancy takes its toll on the body and fatigue is common in pregnant women. However, fatigue is also a symptom of a vitamin deficiency. Iron and the vitamin B complex when lacking in the diet display similar symptoms. Fatigue is the most common symptom of any vitamin or mineral deficiency. Ensuring that the pregnant woman is getting enough iron is important to avoid severe anemia. Maintaining energy levels and reduced fatigue are some of the benefits of taking prenatal vitamins.

In addition to fatigue, a deficiency in both the vitamin B complex and iron can cause dry brittle hair, hair loss, and brittle finger nails that break easily. Having great hair and nails is important not only for health reasons but to help maintain self esteem. When we look good we feel good. These are some other benefits of prenatal vitamins.

A calcium supplement is important for the developing baby and the mother as well. The mother's bone mass and dental health can be compromised if calcium is lacking in the diet. A benefit to taking a prenatal calcium supplement is the overall health of the mother's bones and teeth. Additionally, the baby will benefit by having proper bone development.

The health of the mother and baby is paramount in prenatal care. Above all else, the mother needs to be healthy in order for the fetus to develop properly. It is recommended that vitamin supplementation start prior to conception. This is to help avoid neural tube defects in the developing fetus. A lack of folate or folic acid in the diet can contribute to the occurrence of these defects. Deficiencies in other vitamins can be dangerous to the fetus as well. Therefore, it is essential that a women looking to become pregnant start taking a multivitamin about 3 month prior to conception. The health and well being of the mother and unborn child are the most important benefits of prenatal vitamins.
